Dame Fiona Caldicott

Dame Fiona Caldicott

National Data Guardian for Health & Care, Office of the National Data Guardian

Dame Fiona was appointed to the role of the National Data Guardian for Health and Care in 2014 by the Secretary of State for Health, after an illustrious career as a clinician, academic and expert on confidentiality. Last year she published a review of data security, consent and opt-outs, which made recommendations to the Government to strengthen the security of health and care information and to help people make informed choices about how their data is used. That report referred very briefly to genetic and genomic data, but since then Dame Fiona and her panel of advisors have been doing some more detailed work on how to ensure that genetic and genomic data can be shared to support care and research in a way that the public can understand and support.
